Licenses
Our tools run in your browser, on code we wrote and on code others wrote and shared. This page lists every third-party part that reaches your browser, with its authors and license. The full texts of the MIT and BSD licenses are at the end.
Viewer and the score tools: OpenSheetMusicDisplay
The viewer, MusicXML to PDF, image and braille, Transpose, Extract a part and the color-coded sheet music draw with OpenSheetMusicDisplay 2.2.1, copyright 2019 PhonicScore, under the BSD 3-Clause license. It draws with VexFlow 1.2.93, copyright (c) 2010 Mohit Muthanna Cheppudira, under the MIT license. Its music braille module, part of the same package, writes the braille.
Player, MusicXML to MP3, Jianpu and Annotate: OSMD Extended
The player, the MP3 converter, the Jianpu converter and the annotation tool run on OSMD Extended 2.2.1 (the Jianpu converter on its numbered-notation build, the annotation tool on its annotations build), our own build of OpenSheetMusicDisplay with the audio player, which is not open source. It contains these open-source libraries:
- VexFlow 1.2.93, copyright (c) 2010 Mohit Muthanna Cheppudira, MIT
- soundfont-player 0.12.0, copyright (c) 2015 Daniel Gómez Blasco, MIT; with sample-player 0.5.5 and audio-loader 0.5.0, copyright (c) 2015 danigb, MIT
- standardized-audio-context 25.3.77, copyright (c) 2024 Christoph Guttandin, MIT
- JSZip 3.10.1, copyright (c) 2009-2016 Stuart Knightley, David Duponchel, Franz Buchinger, António Afonso, under the MIT license (dual-licensed MIT or GPLv3; we use it under MIT)
- Material Components for the web, copyright (c) 2014-2020 Google, Inc., MIT
- Handlebars 4.7.10, copyright (C) 2011-2019 Yehuda Katz, MIT
- loglevel 1.9.2, copyright (c) 2013 Tim Perry, MIT
- typescript-collections 1.3.3, copyright (c) 2010-2017 Tomasz Ciborski, MIT
- tslib, copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation, 0BSD
- in the annotations build also Splide 2.4.21, copyright (c) 2020 Naotoshi Fujita, MIT, and uuid 11.1.1, copyright (c) 2010-2020 Robert Kieffer and other contributors, MIT
The notices kept in the builds are in their license files: the player build, the Jianpu build and the annotations build.
Music font
The annotation tool draws its symbols in Gonville 0.1.9313, a music font by Simon Tatham, whose font files “may be used without restriction”; the font file itself says that no copyright is claimed on it. The PDFs the tool makes embed it.
Instrument sounds
Their instruments come from the Fluid (R3) General MIDI soundfont, copyright (c) 2000-2002, 2008 Frank Wen, released by him under the MIT license. We serve the converted set from midi-js-soundfonts by Benjamin Gleitzman, which names the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license for it, and the drums from paulrosen/midi-js-soundfonts (MIT).
MP3 downloads
MP3 files are encoded with LAME, under the GNU Lesser General Public License, compiled to WebAssembly by wasm-media-encoders 0.7.0, copyright (c) 2020-2024 arseneyr, MIT (license). If that encoder can’t run, lamejs 1.2.1 takes over, a JavaScript port of LAME under the LGPL (license). Both are served unchanged, as separate files, so they can be replaced.
PDF: jsPDF and svg2pdf.js
jsPDF 4.2.1, copyright (c) 2010-2025 James Hall and (c) 2015-2025 yWorks GmbH, MIT, writes the PDF files. svg2pdf.js 2.8.1, copyright (c) 2015-2026 yWorks GmbH and (c) 2013-2015 Vitaly Puzrin, MIT, draws the engraved pages into them as vectors. They bring a few small helpers, all under the MIT license: fast-png, @babel/runtime, cssesc, font-family-papandreou, specificity and svgpath.
MIDI: Verovio
Verovio 6.3.0, the music engraving library of the RISM Digital Center, under the GNU Lesser General Public License, version 3 or later. We serve it unchanged, as its own files, so it can be replaced; the license texts are next to it (LGPL, GPL), and the source is at github.com/rism-digital/verovio.
Validator: libxml2 and the MusicXML schema
The validator checks files with libxml2 2.13.8, copyright (C) 1998-2012 Daniel Veillard, under the MIT license, compiled to WebAssembly by xmllint-wasm 5.3.0 (MIT, based on xml.js by Alon Zakai). We serve it unchanged, with its license.
It checks against the MusicXML 4.0 schema, copyright 2004-2021 the Contributors to the MusicXML Specification, published by the W3C Music Notation Community Group under the W3C Community Final Specification Agreement. We serve the schema files unchanged, with a note on their source.
Converter: fflate
fflate 0.8.3, copyright (c) 2026 Arjun Barrett, MIT. It reads and writes the zip container of .mxl files and packs files into one ZIP: pages as images, every part of a score; jsPDF uses it too, to compress the PDFs.
Search: MiniSearch
MiniSearch 7.2.0, copyright 2022 Luca Ongaro, MIT. It runs the tool search on the home page.
