Transpose MusicXML

Transpose a MusicXML or MXL file to another key in your browser, then download it as MusicXML or as a PDF. Nothing is uploaded.

Runs in your browser: your file never leaves your computer.

Drop a MusicXML file here, or click to choose one

Supported: .xml, .musicxml, .mxl

No file at hand? (Clementi, Sonatina op. 36 no. 1).

How it works

The transposer rewrites the MusicXML itself: every note, key signature, accidental and chord symbol moves by the interval you choose, spelled the way a musician writes it, so A♯ up a major second becomes B♯, not C. Where a key could be written two ways, it takes the one with fewer sharps or flats, D♭ major rather than C♯ major. OpenSheetMusicDisplay (OSMD), the MusicXML renderer we maintain, then draws the result, so the pages above are exactly what you download.

We checked it against OSMD's own transposition: on our test scores, every note is spelled the same.

Questions

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file is transposed and drawn in your browser, and it never leaves your computer.

What happens to drums and guitar tablature?

They stay as they are: percussion has no key to move, and tablature would need new fret numbers. The page tells you when a file has such parts.

Does it work for transposing instruments?

Yes. A clarinet in B♭ stays a clarinet in B♭: its written notes move with the rest of the score, so everything still sounds together.

Can I see it in numbered notation?

The Jianpu converter transposes too, and shows the result as numbered notation.
