MusicXML and MXL to MP3 Converter

Turn a MusicXML or MXL file into an MP3 or WAV recording of the score, made in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

Runs in your browser: your file never leaves your computer.

Drop a MusicXML file here, or click to choose one

Supported: .xml, .musicxml, .mxl

No file at hand? (Clementi, Sonatina op. 36 no. 1).

How it works

The converter plays the score the way the MusicXML Player does, with the audio player of OpenSheetMusicDisplay (OSMD), the MusicXML renderer we maintain. Only it doesn't wait for the music: it writes every note straight into the recording, faster than real time, with repeats, dynamics and tempo marks, then encodes it as MP3 or WAV. All of it happens in your browser tab.

The instrument sounds come from the FluidR3 General MIDI soundfont and load from this site the first time a score needs them.

Questions

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file is read and the audio is made in your browser; the file never leaves your computer. Only the instrument sounds are downloaded, from this site.

Which instruments do I hear?

Each part plays the instrument the file asks for, by its MIDI program or by the part's name, as a General MIDI sound. The result sounds like a notation program playing the score, not like a recording of musicians.

Can I change the tempo or the balance?

Open the file in the MusicXML Player: set the tempo and the instrument volumes there, then download the MP3 or WAV from the player.

MP3 or WAV?

MP3 is small and plays everywhere. WAV is uncompressed, about seven times the size of a 192 kbit/s MP3, and the better start if you want to edit the audio.

Built on OpenSheetMusicDisplay audio export (OSMD Extended 2.2.1, by PhonicScore), FluidR3 General MIDI soundfont by Frank Wen, from midi-js-soundfonts (MIT, CC BY 3.0 in the converted set), LAME MP3 encoder, through wasm-media-encoders (LGPL (LAME), MIT (wasm-media-encoders)).
